Twice a year, my rural area’s volunteer fire department does fundraisers. Earlier this year, I wrote about why we have to. Personally, I would rather work traffic control than flip pancakes or go to area businesses hat-in-hand asking for donations. I’m not a huge fan of being asked for donations either.

And yet here I am, asking you to contribute some hard-earned cash to the Daily Yonder. Like the first responders in your community, the Yonder’s mission is to serve and protect rural America. Like my volunteer fire department, the Yonder provides services without a subscription fee. There’s no paywall to get past to reach the news, analysis, and commentary you rely on.

In particular, I’m asking for your financial contribution to help support the Daily Yonder’s newsletters. Sometimes my brain is like a hoarder house being blasted by a fire hose of information and misinformation. The Yonder’s thoughtfully curated free email newsletters bring the platform’s latest stories and other rural reporting to my email inbox. That’s as close as I can get to the peace and quiet of a library reading room without the 52-mile round trip to town. Your mileage may vary, but I suspect you, too, are a fan of the Yonder’s newsletters.

I have other trusted sources of news and commentary. But occasionally with others I find a huge gap between their perspective and rural perspective. The Yonder gets me. The Yonder gets us.

So please help support the Daily Yonder with your contribution. And while you’re at it, maybe write another check to your local volunteer fire department. They could use it, too.

Your contribution is appreciated.

Note, contributions from individuals are eligible to be matched up to $1,000 per donor from November 1 to December 31, 2023, to a combined total of at least $13,000, through the NewsMatch national-matching program. The Daily Yonder is eligible to receive an additional $10,000 in matching funds thanks to support from the Wyncote Foundation. These matching funds run concurrently, which means every dollar we raise, up to $10,000, is matched twice. Monthly recurring donations are matched at the 12-month value of the donation, up to $1,000. For more details about eligibility see NewsMatch guidelines.

The Daily Yonder is a project of the Center for Rural Strategies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Gifts may be tax deductible; consult a tax adviser for more information.
