Half of the students graduating from the University of Iowa psychiatric training program leave the state after graduating. It's the only school in the state that trains psychiatrists, and that has left Iowa 47th in the nation in the number of psychiatrists per capita, according to a report by Tony Leys in the Des Moines Register. The problem is worse in rural Iowa. (The light counties on the map above have no psychiatrists.) A recent survey found that 156 of the state's 230 active psychiatrists work in the state's six biggest cities.There are 65 openings in Iowa for psychiatrists. So the state is offering five $40,000 annual stipends to psychiatrists willing to work in underserved areas.
