There may be somebody who believes the nation’s roads are in better shape than they were a decade or two ago, but we haven’t met him. There isn’t enough money to build the bridges and repair the roads. “We have a crisis coming. The forces are in place. The question is, are we going to do something about it,” said Jack Schenendorf, vice chairman of a task force on financing federal highways.

Much of the new construction is being financed by tolls. That’s not going to work in rural areas, said some legislators at a hearing in Rapid City, South Dakota. (Traffic would be too light for these roads to be profitable.) A U.S. Department of Transportation official said building toll roads in urban areas may free up money for rural construction.

Well…..The other alternative is to raise the gas tax, which has remained stagnant since 1993.
