The American Indian news aggregate website, Indianz.com reports that the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota awarded a $50,000 grant to support a documentary about the Indian trust fund lawsuit.
Broken Promises: Indian Trust tells the story of Elouise Cobell, a member of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, and her quest to hold the federal government accountable for billions of dollars of money owned by individual Indians. She filed the lawsuit in 1996 and agreed to a settlement with the Obama administration last December.
Although approved by the U. S. House of Representatives, the settlement is stalled in the Senate. A court-imposed deadline of October 15 is drawing near.
“This is an important story to be told. It clearly illustrates the nature of the historic relationship between the federal government and Indian people. We felt it was important to support this project to show our solidarity with our Indian relatives and to help educate the public on a significant part of American history,” Chairman Stanley R. Crooks said.
Fire in the Belly Productions is behind the project.
