Rep. Kenny Hulshof (above) won the Republican nomination to be governor of Missouri yesterday. Or, as one publication put it, "Ethanol Wins in Missouri Primary." Hulshof will face Democrat Jay Nixon, the state's Attorney General, in November.Hulshof and his opponent, state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, had divided over government support for ethanol. Steelman had opposed ethanol subsidies or mandates, hoping to gain support from regions where livestock raisers have suffered from higher feed costs. Hulshof supported ethanol mandates.Steelman did win in the southern part of Missouri, where livestock raisers and social conservatives predominate. She also did well in Kansas City. But she lost to Hulshof by less than 20,000 votes out of more than 370,000 cast. Democrat Nixon supports state ethanol mandates.
