U.S. News & World Report recognizes the long-standing efforts in rural communities to “grow your own” businesses. “The Toyota lottery doesn’t work,” says John Molinaro, a rural development expert at the Aspen Institute.

Okay, it turns out that states still spend most of their money trying to lure the next big factory, automobile plant or steel foundry. But there is some money going to folks who are starting businesses in small towns, and it’s good USN&WR salutes the effort.
