Anti-abortion groups are asking the Iowa attorney general to investigate a unique system for delivering abortion pills in rural clinics, according to a story in The Des Moines Register.
The system, devised by Planned Parenthood, sets up computer contact between doctors in Des Moines and patients in more remote areas. The doctor interviews the patient and, if satisfied, releases the latch on a drawer that contains pills that induce an abortion. Patients are attended to by on-site nurses and have follow-up computer conferences with the Des Moines doctor.
“Planned Parenthood of the Heartland leaders say the system is a safe way to provide abortions in towns where the procedure otherwise would not be available,” writes reporter Tony Leys.
Kansas-based Operation Rescue contends this method violates Iowa law, which requires that all abortions be performed by doctors. A spokesman for the AG’s office said this matter was best left to the state medical board.
